The Capoeira Academy is a non-profit association that has been providing Brazilian dance, martial arts, and music workshops in the Edmonton area since 2001. We currently have a new studio that has opened on Whyte Avenue. Our instructor, Reni Lima Ferreira, has been teaching capoeira in Brazil and Canada for over 20 years. Reni is an accomplished and well-respected instructor in the martial art of Capoeira, Afro-Brazilian dance, Afro-Brazilian drumming and percussion. Born in Salvador da Bahia, Reni has extensive knowledge and understanding about the cultural and historical significance of these art forms.
Capoeira grew out of a time of oppression during the 1600’s when African slaves were shipped to Brazil. Capoeira was a way for the slaves to express themselves through music and dance. Secretly, the slaves disguised the cunning of the martial art within the movements of the dance, to “trick” their masters. Today, it is practiced around the world and continues to be used as a means of self-expression and empowerment. Capoeira incorporates fluid and dance like movements with acrobatics, feints, and kicks, creating an ever evolving and playful game.
Capoeira is played in a “roda” (circle) formed by capoeiristas (players) who provide the rhythm and energy of the game through music and song. Singing and clapping accompany the traditional instruments, which include the berimbau (one stringed instrument), pandeiro (tambourine) and drums. These songs, sung in Portuguese, have significant cultural and historical context. Today, Capoeira is strongly associated with other musical and dance genres, such as Samba, Maculele and Orixas.
The Capoeira Academy is able to provide your school with workshops and performances that can address your curricular needs. The Olympics will be hosted by Brazil in 2016, and we hope to increase awareness of Brazil’s official national sport by bringing Capoeira to your students.
We would be happy to discuss your needs and design a workshop for your students. Workshops could include any or all of the following:
- Capoeira workshop
- Afro-Brazilian Drumming and percussion workshop
- Afro-Brazilian Dance (Maculele, Samba) workshop
- Presentation and question and answer about capoeira’s cultural and historical importance in Brazil
- Performance demonstrating capoeira, music, and dance
